Dear Jack and net,

For a reference, we suggest Victoria Purcell-Gates who works in literacy
research at Harvard Univ. She is the author of a useful study described in
her book "Other People's Words."

You might also contact Literacy Volunteers of America, Syracuse NY. I don't
know that they have a scientific study on the issue, but their volunteers
have tutored several hundreds of thousands of low literacy adults, and they
have tons of assessment data as well as anecdotal information. LVA or
Laubach Literacy would be naturals to do the study you inquired about.

Based on our own years as tutors, illiteracy trauma is selective (trauma may
be too strong a word). That is, those who are recent immigrants to this
country have the least trauma - if any. After all, they are new here and may
be expected to have some learning needs in English. Those who are native born
Americans, but who can't read and write English very well tend to have more
trauma - if any. They may perceive that they had opportuities to learn, but
didn't, so they are at "fault".

This might be a good topic for a grant request.
