Thank you, Jill.  I think you are right in your observation about the readers 
of this discussion group, and I want to offer the opinion that therein lies a 
potential problem.  You are describing the crucial relationship of text 
variables to learner variables.  The point is that the two are inseparable 
when considering comprehension.  A "balanced concern" for both sides of the 
equation is important, that is, we know that communication is far more than 
writing techniques.  A truism we should not take for granted.  Of course, the 
listserv can be whatever the readers want to make it.  But you made me stop 
and examine my own focus for a moment, and it is appreciated. Debbie
