The document provides an overview of health literacy practices in Canada, identifies and discusses key issues surrounding health and literacy, and profiles a number of past and current health literacy projects and programs. The draft paper is the product of Phase 1 – the literature review and needs assessment phase – of a project to establish a Patient Education Centre at the Montreal General Hospital. The document’s focus is exclusively Canadian, but we would very much appreciate any comments, suggestions, information, and/or experiences that could help us with future phases of our project.
