Readability formulas are limited in determining the readability of health education materials. They assess the reading grade level of printed material but they do not take into account other important variables that determine whether a reader is going to be able to comprehend it. The work by Doak, Doak, and Root is excellent in that it takes into account some of these other variables. I have developed an instrument called the Readability Assessment Instrument (RAIN) which is designed to determine the readability of text. It takes into account a large number of variables that reading researchers have found to impact comprehension. The RAIN is designed to assess printed materials to determine the extent to which printed materials incorporate these variables. The instrument can be used to assess printed materials and can also be used as a guide for rewriting materials to ensure they do incorporate variables that affect comprehension. The RAIN has been used to assess healt!
h education materials related to a number of different areas of health.
