However, we are a full-service research company with experience in a range of areas and we conduct studies nation-wide. As I have an MS in public health and a dozen-odd years experience working in health departments, I work primarily with government and non-profit clients, mostly departments of health. Right now I am working with the Medi-Cal administration (Medicaid in California) exploring how beneficiaries choose (or don't!) a managed health care plan. We suspect that literacy may play a significant role, as the act of choosing a plan means reviewing a formidable stack of printed material and then filling out a form. We will be conducting a telephone survey with beneficiaries and have an opportunity to add several questions regarding literacy. I understand that determining literacy is no simple charge, but I am hoping that we can still perform some meaningful research in the space of a few questions. Something around 10 questions, I think. Is this a reasonable goal? And can anyone point me to any survey instruments that I might be able to use, ideally along with norming data? We really believe there is plenty of work to be done with literacy for the health departments, and hope this will be the first of many opportunities to explore its role in designing effective health communications. Thanks for your help. -Stephanie Stephanie Prausnitz, MS Project Director Field Research Corporation 222 Sutter Street, Suite 200 San Francisco, CA 94108 415.392-5763 415.434-2541 (fax) stephaniep@field.com
