For one section I borrowed an idea I had learned from Sue Stableford at Maine AHEC: First I photocopied a short piece of text onto a clear overhead slide. Then I photocopied the slide so that the words were printed backwards. I used this as an example of the effort necessary to decode when you aren't a good reader. Peoples' responses were interesting ranging from giving up quickly and saying it was too much trouble to those who struggled diligently to make sense of what was written. It seems a good way to show fluent readers how the other half reads! Good luck. Linda McIntosh, RN CS lmcintosh@mediaone.net Coordinator of Patient Education Cambridge Health Alliance Cambridge MA
