(6) Association for Women in Communications Partners
with Laubach Literacy
The Association for Women in Communications
(http://www.womcom.org/), a professional development
organization based in Severna Park, Maryland, has
announced a five-year partnership with Laubach Literacy
(http://www.laubach.org/home.html), an international
literacy organization, in response to statistics that show
women are among the poorest of the poor in almost every
country of the world.
As part of Laubach's Women in Literacy/Women in Action
campaign, AWC will integrate literacy awareness programs
and volunteer opportunities into its 120 student and
professional chapters. In addition, the organization will
work to raise awareness about literacy through the
national media. Laubach, which was founded by literacy
pioneer Dr. Frank C. Laubach in 1955, hopes to reach
400,000 women worldwide through the initiative.
"The initiative is a natural partnership for us because of
the importance we in the communications field place on the
written word," said Renee Gadoua, co-chair of AWC's
Literacy Task Force. "It's stunning to learn that millions
of women need help with basic reading skills in order to
survive."
