Dear Friends: I received the following input from a concerned member of our
discussion group. Perhaps many of you share this thought. Please note my
response, and I'll try to set an example by "hightlighting" myself. If you
have any questions about this PLEASE EMAIL ME DIRECTLY, NOT THE LIST.

"I find it really tedious to wade through responses which include the
original email and the original email in some other format, and so
forth--the entire thread--and sometimes everyone who responds does the same
thing!"

part of my response:

"The original posting is tacked on to the end of the reply in toto whenever
the sender hits the "reply" button instead of going through all the clicks to
"write", then type in an address, etc. The only way to stop it is to expect
everyone to "write" and not use the reply button.  Not only is this
unenforceable, but I think I'd have an avalanche of complaints if it were
even suggested.  The different type fonts and sizes are also determined by
the sender.  Many people customize how messages appear in their computers,
and also what "style" they go out in.

However, there is one thing that helps.   If you highlight just a few
sentences in the original posting, then hit "reply",  usually those sentences
appear at the top of the reply message and the rest of the original is
eliminated.  Once again, we can't require this, but perhaps some listers
don't know this can be done so I will mention it.  Also, bear in mind some
listers' software will not allow this, and others like the entire message
repeated, particularly in case they want to print out the message and the
reply together.    I myself, if I have a lot of messages to clear and not
much time, am likely to hit "reply" immediately instead of taking the time to
choose sentences to highlight."

Many thanks to the memeber who expressed her concern and many thanks to all
for your help.
