Dear Friends, I am posting this excerpt of a message I received from a member
because it has useful information. (Many thanks to the writer).
"What your questioner is asking is basic etiquette on list servers, and
always has been. Although most people on this list are probably receiving it
at work, nonetheless many of them may be receiving it through a modem, and
the longer messages are, the longer it takes for them to download. People
outside the U.S. often pay per-minute connection charges, so this costs them
money. It is also a waste of bandwidth.
Many people do not realize that their e-mail software will have settings that
lets them decide whether or not to automatically include the content of the
original e-mail when replying. There are two ways to handle this:
1. Set your options so that the original message is NOT included.
2. Set your options so that the original message is included. Hit reply.
Press Control-A (on a Windows machine), which highlights all the text. Then
delete it.
One should never include an entire thread. It is helpful to do a one-sentence
summary ("Lucy wants to know if anyone has heard of XXX."), in case someone
missed a posting. (This also helps to pinpoint the problem if people aren't
answering the question the poster THOUGHT he or she asked.)"
As co-moderator, I would like to add that learning list etiquette is an
ongoing experience (I just learned something new myself) and I would not like
to see anyone hesitate to participate in the discussion for fear of offending
someone with an etiquette error. Members who are growing in their use of the
medium should strive, in my opinion, to learn more and more (which does not
happen without participation) and members who are adept and use "netiquette"
as second nature should be patient with others who are learning. We can all
meet in the middle, and in the process continue to increase the quality of
the interaction.
Cheers, Debbie
