The term slipping between the cracks is used in education today. Its
when someone goes to school and they cannot read very well when they
leave school and I can say that I'm one of them.

Wednesday of this past week I received a call from my pharmacy, telling
me that a drug that I was taking to lower my cholesterol (Baycol) had
been recalled, that I should discontinue taking this drug, and that I
should contact my family doctor. I live in a small town and the doctor I
go to is the only doctor in her clinic. When I got there I found out
that my doctor had just had the baby that she had been expecting and
that she would not be back to work for about six weeks. I told the nurse
that works in this office about the recall of Baycol. She told me she
had not received any information about the recall at that point. She
tried to call my pharmacy a few times but the line was busy each time,
so she called another pharmacy and they told her yes they had
information about the recall and they would fax the information to her.
They also told her they were telling their customers who were taking
Baycol to use up the pills that they had and when they were gone they
should see their doctor about using some other medication. I told her
that I did not want to go along with that advice and that I think I
should stop taking the pills. She then called another medical clinic and
asked them what they were doing about the Baycol recall and they said
they were telling their patients to stop taking Baycol and to come in to
talk about what to do next.

Because my family doctor would not be back for some time we decided to
call my cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic, the doctor who prescribed this
medication for me. When I called I got his secretary and I told her my
problem she said she would get back to me. This past Friday evening when
I got home I had a message on my answering machine from her. She said my
cardiologist was on vacation and she had talked to one of his associate
doctors about my problem and that he said to stop taking the Baycol and
to see my family doctor about what to do next. I think I have fallen
between the medical cracks somehow. At this point a lot of adult
learners would just give up and do nothing. Because of my past medical
history I know better than to do nothing. I will be back at my doctors
office on Monday asking more questions from the nurse who will be
there. Where do I go from here?
