I am disturbed by this revelation if in fact it is true.
When adults with low literacy visit healthcare practitioners, they're
usually in great discomfort because (usually) visiting the doctor is the
last resort. To imagine during this visit or subsequent visits they
include a health literacy assessment is frightening.
Comfortability and familiarity are components needed to encourage
participation, be it verbal or written. How many adult educators have
to go to great efforts to encourage adult learners (whom they see
somewhat regularly) to participate in baseline and progress assessments?
Many!
As an educated person, I would be greatly offended if I visited a doctor
for an illness and his/her staff decided to test my comprehension
ability. So as a former healthcare professional and a adult educator, I
think it on site health literacy assessment would do more damage than
good.
However, I am pleased to see that we are exploring multiple methods to
address health literacy needs of the low literacy population. I think we
just need to keep exploring.
Ursula

..there is a trend within the health field that some health care
providers=20
are looking for ways to test patients for literacy levels.
Thank you Archie for your valuable input. I would like to see some
discussion about this "trend" regarding literacy testing. Comments,
anyone? =20
