Greetings again, and thanks Debbie for the offer to share a bit more about
PLAIN. There's lots more on the Web site, but here is some background to
orient everyone.

Also, after catching a formatting glitch in my original post, I'm going to
follow this message with the corrected version.

Thanks again,
Michelle

About PLAIN
Plain Language Association International (PLAIN) is an organization of plain
language practitioners and advocates dedicated to improving the quality of
communication in all fields and organizations. Started in 1993 by two plain
language experts in Canada, it now has members in Australia, Canada,
England, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden and the United States. The
association maintains a free list-server mailing list and a Web site at
http://www.plainlanguagenetwork.org.

PLAIN
· promotes the interests of plain language professionals
· helps develop standards and practices for the plain language
profession
· encourages research and development in the field of plain language
· provides marketing and networking services for members

PLAIN’s history
PLAIN (then the Plain Language Network) had its origins in a 1992 conference
held in Vancouver, B.C. with the support of the National Literacy
Secretariat, the Department of Justice Canada and the Plain Language
Institute. Since then, conferences have been held in Winnipeg, Manitoba
Calgary, Alberta and Houston, Texas. The early conferences focused on
sharing best practices among plain language practitioners, many of whom
worked in isolation in this relatively new communications specialty. The
last two conferences also took important steps to formalize the young
organization’s goals and structure.

PLAIN’s fourth international conference, scheduled for September 26 – 29,
2002, will take place in Toronto. It will be convened by the association’s
chair, Christine Mowat, President of Wordsmith Associates of Edmonton,
Alberta. Sally McBeth, Manager of Clear Language and Design, a division of
East End Literacy, will co-chair and host the conference with Michelle Black
of Simply Read Writing Service, Toronto.

I would like to invite the Plain Language Network (Michelle, perhaps?) to
share a little about what the Network is, how it got started, etc. There
may be listers who are unfamiliar with it. Many thanks, Debbie
