A survey is absolutely worthless when returned if this has not been investigated and thought through. How will I use the data provided if question #4 is answered "yes" or if it's answered "no?" What will this data tell me, what will a "yes" answer reveal that is of more value than a "no" answer? Was the language in the question designed so that there will be a significant component to interpret depending on the answer given? I agree, that arrows may only confuse the issue. Beyond the basic principles of designing any material to be easy to read, and doing some focus testing/key informant questioning, I'm wondering if there is anything peculiar to surveys that I should think about for easy to read survey design. Specifically, for example, there seem to be sort of two philosophies re: directing readers to the appropriate questions. One style is the text "if no, then skip to question 8" method for directing respondents. The other style uses arrows - where if you circle "no" you follow the arrow next to "no" to question 8. My gut reaction (I'm not a health lit person, so take my gut reaction with a grain of salt) is that the arrows end up being confusing (too easy to end up with what looks like a plate of spaghetti). Any comments on this issue or others would be greatly appreciated. Also, I sort of scan the list, so if this has been discussed recently, please accept my apologies for not catching it.
