I'm cross-posting this message, for any from this list who are interested.
If you would like more information, please contact Michelle Black,
Conference Co-chair, at michelleb@simplyread.org. We hope to expand the
reach of this conference so that it truly reflects the international extent
of our membership, and the universal importance of plain language.

The conference organizers are delighted to announce the call for
proposals to members and friends of PLAIN. The Call and the Speaker's
Proposal form are now available on the PLAIN Web site at
www.plainlanguagenetwork.org (with thanks to Bill DuBay, our Webmaster). A
short summary follows below, for those who haven't yet seen this message.

We are also pleased to announce that we've already began receiving
proposals! So if you are considering speaking, we look forward to hearing
from you by March 1, 2002. We have tried to make the Speaker's Proposal
form easy for you to complete in just a few minutes.

Plain Language Association International (PLAIN)
4th International Conference
At the Heart of Communication: across disciplines and around the world
September 26 ? 29, 2002
Ramada Hotel and Suites, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

About PLAIN
Plain Language Association International (PLAIN) is an organization of
plain language practitioners and advocates dedicated to improving the
quality of communication in all fields and organizations.

PLAIN:
· promotes the interests of plain language professionals
· helps develop standards and practices for the plain language profession
· encourages research and development in the field of plain language
· provides marketing and networking services for members

Conference themes
The conference program will be organized around three themes:

1. Putting plain language and its focus on clarity at the centre: PLAIN and
its conferences are critically needed to crystallize the meaning of plain
language and place its importance at the centre--rather than on the
fringes--of communication practices.

2. Clarity across professions and borders: This conference aims to raise
PLAIN's profile to a new level, advance public understanding of the issue,
and broaden attendance both geographically and by discipline.

3. The benefits of plain language: We want the conference to give a voice
to people in business, labour, government and consumer organizations who
have experienced and even measured the value of plain language.

To expose conference participants to as many fine speakers as possible, the
program will offer a rich selection of panels and short workshops.

Please submit your proposal by March 1, 2002.

To submit a proposal:
1) Read the Background Information and Information for Speakers, available
at http://www.plainlanguagenetwork.org/proposals.rtf
2) Fill out the Speaker's Proposal Form
3) Follow the directions for sending your proposal form to the Program
Design Team by fax, mail or e-mail.
