This is a grass-roots campaign to promote the need for understandable health information. Health literacy advocates everywhere are encouraged to sponsor awareness-raising events in their local area. It is my delight to share the good news that the Health Literacy Month Web site, www.healthliteracymonth.com is refreshed, revised, and updated just in time to prepare for HLMonth 2002. On the Health Literacy Month Web site, you will find: * “Making a Difference in Health Literacy.” Eight practical and effective ways you can participate in HLMonth 2002. * “Health Literacy Month Map.” A map and accompanying summary reports of “who’s doing what” for HLMonth 2000, 2001, and 2002. Click here to find what others are doing or have done, learn ways to contact them, and also submit information about your organization’s HLMonth 2002 event. * “FAQs.” Answers to frequently asked questions about health literacy and HLMonth. * “Health Literacy Poster.” A beautiful downloadable poster designed by Helaine Bader of HDWebworks as well as ordering information to purchase postcards (in lots of 100) of the same design. * “Articles.” Four articles about HLMonth including, “Telegraph, Telephone, Tell a Journalist: How to Work with the Press to Increase Health Literacy” by Kathryn Kempf and Deborah Walter of B&Y Communications. * “Contact Us.” Includes a form to submit your information for the HLMonth Map, as well as a request to be added to the HLMonth e-list. * “Partners.” HLMonth is an all-volunteer grassroots initiative that relies on the dedication and generosity of others. For HLMonth 2002, the sponsoring partners are: B&Y Communication, KShaw Design, Health Literacy Consulting, and On Call magazine. Although it’s not yet posted on the HLMonth Web site, you and your colleagues might also want to participate in a FREE one-hour Health Literacy TeleClass, “Countdown to Health Literacy Month: What You Can Do Now to Get Ready for October.” I am offering this class each month from now through October. Participants speak glowingly about this opportunity to not only learn new information but also brainstorm with colleagues across the US and Canada. To learn more about this and other Health Literacy TeleClasses, go to my Health Literacy Consulting Web site at www.healthliteracy.com and click on “TeleClasses.” Questions? Comments? Please contact me by e-mail at helen@healthliteracy.com or by phone at 508-653-1199. Feel free, as well, to forward this HLMonth e-message to your colleagues. Thanks for your ongoing interest in HLMonth. Together, we CAN make a difference, ~Helen Osborne, M.Ed., OTR/L Founding Director, HLMonth & President, Health Literacy Consulting Phone: 508-653-1199 E-mail: helen@healthliteracy.com Web site: http://www.healthliteracy.com
