At the recent US DHHS Office of Minority Health's National Leadership Summit on Eliminating Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health, Cynthia Baur of DHHS announced in a panel discussion on health literacy that the department is looking at promoting increased collaboration between the health care and adult education fields to reduce health literacy problems. One useful recent resource from the adult ed field is the Literacy and Health issue of Focus on Basics at http://www.gse.harvard.edu/~ncsall/fob/2002/fobv5ic.htm . When considering people with limited English proficiency there are additional barriers to health literacy, which are discussed in a digest from the National Center for ESL Literacy Education called "Health Literacy and Adult English Language Learners", available online at http://www.cal.org/ncle/digests/healthlitQA.htm.
