We just wanted to remind you of it and let you know we have room for more attendees. To help you decide whether it might be helpful for you, here is just a taste from our terrific lineup, which includes over 50 speakers from 9 countries: __________________________________________________________ Did a Butterfly Elect George Bush? The implications of design on voter literacy Greg Ioannou Greg Ioannou is founder and President of Colborne Communications, which provides a full range of plain language services to various corporate and government clients. He won the 1992 Forum Gold Award for Special Achievements in Plain Language for a series of booklets he wrote on dispute resolution. No recent document has been studied as thoroughly as Florida's infamous "butterfly ballot" for the 2000 U.S. Presidential election. The voting medium, the wording of the ballot, the ballot design, and even related ergonomic factors have been studied closely. The results reveal a wide range of ways that this simple ballot failed to communicate with voters. __________________________ Business and Finance: Case studies in problem solving and improved performance Rose Grotsky Rose Grotsky heads Learning Communications Inc., a Toronto-based consulting firm that helps corporations and governments write and communicate in plain language. She develops documents for print and Web pages, designs effective information systems, researches workplace communications, delivers customized workshops in plain language and design, and is the author of "Get to the Point: A Strategy for Writing Clearly at Work." Rose's firm has partnered with two large Canadian companies in the telecommunications and financial services industries on a groundbreaking project to study and demonstrate the economic benefits of shifting to plain language. They intend to prove, quantitatively and qualitative ly, that a positive return on investment and other performance benefits result from using plain language on corporate intranets. _______________________________________________________________ Jacquie Harrison Jacquie Harrison leads the School of Communication at UNITEC Institute of Technology in Auckland, New Zealand. She has previously worked with the leader of the New Zealand Government's income tax rewrite team on a testing project that compared the accessibility of the original statute with that of re-drafted versions. A training and consulting project with a recently merged accountancy firm in New Zealand provided Jacquie with some interesting insights into the increasing relevance of plain language to intensely competitive commercialenvironments. She worked with people from a range of levels within the firm to redesign the monthly reports they made to their clients. Plain language consultants will appreciate the main lesson of this project: the support of those at the top of the organisation is essential. __________________________________________-_________________ To view the complete agenda and program notes, visit the Conference page of the PLAIN Web site (www.plainlanguagenetwork.org/heart.htm).
