I have learned an enormous amount from the questions and comments posted on the list, and assume that when an issue arises, there will be activity. Let me at least contribute, as colleagues have been doing, by referring you to a new report from The Centre for Literacy of Quebec on the Health Literacy Project at the MOntreal General Hospital that has been in place since 1999. Phase 2 of the project established participatory health education committees on three hospital units and identified three key health messages to be redesigned in a variety of media and formats accessible to hard-to-reach patients. Theer was also extensive training of health care professionals. We completed this phase in September, reported to our funder (Health Canada) in November and will be posting the final report and an executive summary on our web site (www.nald.ca/litcent.htm)early next week. The findings are incomplete because the phase did not include a formal assessment of the materials (next phase), but initial feedback indicated strong impact on mainstream patients , but limited impact on the targets groups. The training has great impact on health care providers awareness of and understanding of health literacy, appeared to affect their communciations with patients. On another note, I am pleased to announce that The Centre for Literacy, in partnership with the Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA)and World Education, will host a three-day Institute, in Montreal from June 26 -28, 2003, on Literacy and Health. That too will be on our web site next week and print versions will be mailed in January. Best wishes for a happy holday and peaceful healthy new year.
