This is a service-learning class. The students will work in teams and visit local Hispanic families and provide the following services: Work with individuals and families to help them with their English, either by tutoring or by teaching small classes. Provide transportation to medical, dental and social service appointments. · Provide childcare at specified times. Translate brochures related to health care and social services. · Interpret for people at medical and social service appointments where there no interpreter is provided The class also learned about the health and social services provided to migrants and international migrants. Dr Lubbs received her doctorate recently and much of her dissertation pertained to the topics in this service-learning course for Spanish language students at VT. Also, she made a presentation at the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese(AATSP) conference in Chicago. The URL for this course is http://www.fll.vt.edu/Lubbs/SylSLearn.html. This is another example of how Spanish language classes are acquiring the skills to provide literacy, interpretation, and translation skills to the communities that medical librarians will provide needed health information.
