Patients that are identified as having "difficulty" with their medications are randomized to either a verbal COUNSELING group only or to a group with verbal COUNSELING PLUS PICTOGRAMS affixed to the medication bottles. We are measuring their literacy levels with S-TOFHLA and are collecting information on improvement of medication knowledge and outcomes data such as HgA1c, lipid values, and blood pressure. This is an ongoing project that is funded through the Pfizer Health Literacy Initiative (Clear Health Communications). I was interested in learning more about the project involving informed consents because it seems like we should be doing a better job. One thought I had was the use of computers to consent our research subjects but currently have no funding for this type of project.
