Julie Keany Hodorowski RN, MA Information Service Manager Cancer Information Service of New York National Cancer Institute Phone: 212-593-8245 Fax: 212-593-9154 Email: hodorowj@mskcc.org The Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the sponsor of the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL), asked the National Academies of Science to convene a panel to assess the issue of performance measures from the 1992 NALS and make recommendations for the 2003 NAAL. The panel has been meeting for some time and has an open meeting next week, in case any of you are especially interested in literacy and health literacy measurement issues. Please share with any interested colleagues. Project summary: <http://www4.nas.edu/webcr.nsf/5c50571a75df494485256a95007a091e/b1dcc5b2 ac3ae8a485256c8400724365?OpenDocument> The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has recently collected data for the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) to assess the literacy levels of adults living in the United States. NCES has asked the National Research Council to make recommendations about performance standards for the 2003 assessment that will be used in analyzing and reporting the results from this assessment. These new performance standards may replace the five performance levels that were used to report adult literacy levels in the last assessment that NCES conducted, which was the National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS) in 1992. Over the past decade, the 1992 performance levels have been used in a variety of ways, such as reporting to the public on the status of adult literacy in the U.S. and guiding policy decisions about adult education and workplace training. The National Research Council is sponsoring this workshop to hear public comment about possible changes to the performance levels used to analyze and report the results of the new assessment. At the workshop, the NRC Committee that is carrying out the study for NCES will share alternative samples of performance levels and ask participants to comment on these new examples and on the old performance levels that were used to report the results in 1992. RSVP using the attached form by February 20. If interested please contact Michael DeCarmine at 202-334-1294 (fax) e-mail: mdecarmine@nas.edu (or) telephone: 202-334-2879
