I conduct a regular workshop called a "Training Program in Clear Health
Communication" at Emory University/Grady Memorial Hospital. The target
audience is Internal Medicine residents, and we're reaching about 120 of
them from Jan-June 2004. We use an interactive small-group workshop and
1-on-1 videotaped standardized patient encounters, in which actors play
the role of low health literate patients. One of the most powerful parts
of the curriculum is viewing the videotaped encounter with each
resident, allowing them to critique their own communication skills and
see areas for improvement. The actors also provide feedback (while
remaining in character), which allows the physicians to hear what their
patients may never tell them. We're evaluating the effectiveness of the
program and hope that it will serve as a model for other institutions.
So far, residents have already reported changing the way they educate
patients, and have specifically increased their use of the teach-back
technique. This work is supported by an Emory career development program
and a Pfizer Health Literacy Initiative Scholar Award.

I would enjoy hearing about other current or planned programs as well.
