The underlying focus was to try to understand more about how information technology can be effectively used to provide access to health information for vulnerable populations - particularly low-literacy and non-English speaking groups. The goal was to develop and evaluate a small set of multimedia multilingual health information resources that were freely available via the web. We currently have 16 topics in 3 formats (PDF, MP3 and "movie-like") and there are materials in seven languages. The materials can all be downloaded to avoid some of the technical barriers of dealing with plug-ins and the need to have a fast internet connection to be able to use streaming media. We created a website called Healthy Roads Media (www.healthyroadsmedia.org) where the materials can be accessed. It was a fascinating project and we have received several small additional grants to continue to add some new materials. Currently we have about 500 files (PDF, MP3 and multimedia) being downloaded each week (mostly non-English). We used a variety of evaluation strategies (using the 5 levels of interactive communication framework from "Wired for Health and Well-Being" from the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion). There are many issues we feel we need to better understand about our strategy so any feedback would be appreciated.
