"Tell me how you will do this when you get home, show me what you will do, what will you tell your spouse about what we've talked about, let's recap - why don't you start", etc,etc, many different relaxed ways that health professionals can ask the patient to repeat back the information or paraphrase it, so that we can be sure that they understand.
