Participants may help to refine evaluation criteria and/or to rate health Web sites. Additional information is available at http://www.hii.org/200.htm and http://www.consumerwebwatch.org (See below) Health Improvement Institute and Consumers Union have announced a partnership to enable consumers to become more informed users of health websites. The partnership is part of Consumers Union's Consumer WebWatch project. The project's objectives include the following: To improve disclosures made by Web site publishers To enable consumers to be more effective Web site users To provide consumers with independent evaluations and ratings of Web sites. In 1997, the Institute conducted a workshop on the quality of health information on the Internet and subsequently developed the Health Improvement Institute Quality Award to rate the raters of health Web sites. The QHII project is an extension of this work. In 2003, the Institute published a report described the results of its search for and analysis and evaluation of criteria sets intended to assess the "reliability" or "credibility" of health websites. Health Improvement Institute is a non-profit, tax exempt, 501(c)3, charitable organization dedicated to improving the quality and productivity of America's health care. The Institute's primary goal is to provide information to patients, providers, payors, purchasers, policy-makers, and the public about available alternatives to ensure that all Americans have the opportunity to make informed health care choices. Consumer WebWatch's mission is to investigate, to inform, and to improve the credibility of information on the Web. ConsumerWebWatch.org is home to research and analysis on issues of credibility, usability and content, along with news of use to consumers navigating the Web. Consumer WebWatch is a project of Consumers Union, the non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports magazine and ConsumerReports.org. It is supported by grants from The Pew Charitable Trusts, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and the Open Society Institute. The Institute is seeking your input and support for this important project. Please bring this opportunity to colleagues' attention; if you are a membership organization, to your members' attention. To participate, please complete the fax response form or contact Awards Coordinator at 301-320-0971 or by email to hii@has.com. ******************************************* Linda S. Potter 56 N.
