The project is funded by the March of Dimes. Our lessons focus on three topic areas - health care, nutrition, and exercise/fitness, which we chose based on interest surveys with ESL students and LEP health department patients. So far, ten instructors in six counties across North Carolina have implemented the nutrition lessons in community college and community-based settings. This month, an additional five counties will join us as we begin piloting our 'health care' lessons. Please visit our website for more details, www.expectingthebest.org . We welcome and appreciate feedback, so I'd like to encourage interested sites to contact me if you would like to join our piloting efforts! For more information about the initiative, click on http://www.projectshine.org/metlife/index.htm. We're interested in other organizations which might be doing similar programs. Does anyone have a sense of how many other organizations have health literacy efforts geared toward immigrants? We're hoping to get some local coverage about our initiative and would like to be able to give a reporter a sense of how widespread the concern over this issue is and the number of organizations which are working on it. Anyone have some quick facts and figures about efforts in health literacy for immigrants? Thanks! All best, Daryl **************** Daryl Gordon Assistant Director, Project SHINE 1601 N.
