I"ve just joined the list. Our organization is the provincial coalition that operates in support of adult and family literacy programs. We carried out a project last year to link literacy and health workers together, to seed further partnerships. Our project met with varied levels of success. Take a look at the project website at www.health.mb.literacy.ca Quandry: Although we talk about how improving health improves literacy, our workshops with 44 literacy representatives showed that a minority feel comfortable broaching health topics. The final report will be posted in a week. We are now seeking funding to provide a classroom teaching tool "Going to the Doctor" in plain language, to help learners feel comfortable acting as self-advocates, instead of relying on the health or literacy systems to adapt to them. If learners become more assertive with asking health-related questions of the system, it will have to adjust. We are going to produce a patient "prompt card" to help adults with low literacy speak up in medical appointments. I"ll be watching the ongoing discussion with interest, as I am also doing some research on this topic for my Master's in Adult Ed. Rina Rudd of Harvard is just about to publish a new resource that looks fabulous as well. If she is on this list, she can talk about it when she is ready! Literacy Partners of Manitoba promotes adult and family literacy by building partnerships with public and private sectors. It also supports the literacy field by providing resources.
