The REALM is a quick indicator of reading levels, that you likely have seen ( Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine) but it requires a person to listen to words being read aloud, so not used at a terminal. The 3 question screnning protocol for parents to test low literacy likelihood that was recently featured in an article in Family Medicine Journal is also very exciting, but it requires interpretation as well ( Do you live with the other parent of this child? Do you ever read books for fun? What is your highest level of education?) Apparently, if the answers to the first two are NO, and the grade level is less than 12, the parent has a strong predictor rate of having low literacy! I'm VERY Interested in these assessment practices. Anyone else care to comment on other instruments? Health districts are now asking for assessment tools for literacy, not just relying on census grade completions as proxy levels to stand for low literacy.
