My name is Aman Nakagawa.

I am in the proposal-drafting phase of applying for a grant to fund a
Health Literacy project at the agency I work for, Housing Works, Inc.
Housing Works, inc. is the largest non-profit AIDS Service organization in
the United States (New York City) with an operating budget of $30 million
and target the most hard-to-reach populations including homeless,
transgender, substance abusers and mentally ill. The populations we mostly
serve are African- and Latino/a-American. The proposal of interest will
link our Job Training Program to Health Literacy outcomes for our client
population. Clients are required to pass an exam at the six grade reading
level to qualify. The pre-vocational reading and writing component is
geared toward improving their ability to read and write. All clients are
linked with primary care through three satellite medical clinics and are
linked to psychosocial services such as day treatment and case management.
The majority of my challenge at this juncture is to produce a structured
curriculum dedicated to improving Health Literacy outcomes and comparing
against a control group.

I have obtained a number of sources on Health Literacy from the literature
in addition to Dr. Rudd's ETS publication and through Federal Government
websites. I wonder if anyone has encountered any valid manualized programs
geared toward improving Health Literacy? Also, there is clearly a
foundation for research but many of the recommendations in Dr. Rudd's paper
hint at phenomena that probably link closely to the literature on
decision-making, planning and other critical neurocognitive processes.

With best regards,
Aman Nakagawa, M.S.
