I feel if adult literacy is going to move forward and be understood, it
will have to go a different route than it has in the past. I feel that
in Iowa we have done some good things for adult learners. We have
created a good balance between improving our reading skills and our
social skills. This balance is what makes a difference in our lives. The
New Readers of Iowa have done many things in the past 15 years and we
are going to have a great conference next month called, Health and
Literacy Working Together.

At this time there is a lot of interest in health literacy in our
country and there is interest in our conference. We are pleased to have
all these organizations and speakers at our conference: the Iowa Health
System and the Harvard School of Public Health will be giving
presentations and there will be a panel of health professionals (doctor,
pharmacist, nutritionist, nurse practitioner, and nurse); VALUE and
World Education will be having sessions on leadership and health
education; speakers will be Pat Blackwell, adult learner/ nurse; Marsha
Tait, Senior Vice President from ProLiteracy; Ed Castor, adult learner;
and Marty Finsterbush, Executive Director of VALUE.

Also at this conference, the adult learners will be discussing their
problems navigating the health care system and they will be making a
health literacy statement. We will release the statement sometime after
the conference is over. There will also be health care professionals and
adult literacy professionals at the conference. We will be trying to
build better communications between these groups. The unique thing about
this conference is that it is organized by The New Readers of Iowa. This
may be a first where people with literacy problems are working with
health professionals to make health care better. The New Readers of Iowa
and The Iowa Health System have now become partners.

I encourage you to take a second look at the outcomes of this
conference. There is a lot of room for all of us to grow, to learn to
work together, and to build partnerships.

If you are interested in this conference, it will be held September
10-11, 2004, in Des Moines, Iowa. We would like to see adult learners,
health professionals, and educators. If you want to come to the
conference, you can email me for information at:
