My most sincere thanks and appreciation goes to all of you who were enthused about, participated in, or otherwise worked on behalf of this important initiative. The goal of HLMonth is to let the world know why health literacy matters. We certainly accomplished that goal this year as evidenced by 32 new HLMonth map postings -- including those from 16 US states and Canada, Scotland, and Kenya. Of note, Iowa stands out from the crowd by having 5 new events posted this year. Kudos on making a state-wide difference! Organizations and individuals participated in HLMonth 2004 in meaningful and creative ways. These included: in-service trainings; public awareness campaigns; newsletter and newspaper articles; community-wide or regional task forces; press conferences; chronic disease self-management programs; library-based events; translated and easier-to-read materials; and health literacy research grants. Together, we CAN and DO make a health literacy difference.
