Kara, I'm so glad you asked. In my experience, most graphic designers have not been trained to know what makes a piece easy to read or use. Too often they are more focused on the aesthetics than the usefulness of a piece. In the early years of my practice, I had to work hard to find a designer who was even willing to listen to guidelines we know work for clear and usable design. I was lucky to find one to train. One of my associates is a seasoned graphic designer who has worked with my firm for over 10 years. She is expert at creating engaging, appealing materials that are also easy to understand and use. We offer design (and writing) services for readers at risk of limited literacy skills as well as for readers who need, or would appreciate, plain language materials at a somewhat higher level. Feel free to contact us if you're interested in more information. Regards to all of you working to make health information more usable!
