I don't doubt Kathleen when she points out that:

Students mugged me on my first day in the classroom, literally before I had
finished hanging up my coat. The principal explained to me that "this
happened because they can feel that a new, white teacher will not respect
them. You seemed an honest, likable person during the interview [for the
position], but the fact that an incident occurred means you must be
disliking them on some level that you have repressed. Otherwise, they would
have refrained."
I had not had time, I think, to "convey" anything to my students: love or
respect, or their opposites.
