To: All Bridges to Practice Trainers

From: June J. Crawford, Reading/Learning Disabilities Program
Analyst
            	National Institute for Literacy

Re: Bridges to Practice "Graduate" Symposium - March 10-13,
2000
        		Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia

We are looking for good trainers across the United States who are interested
in becoming certified Master Trainers for the Bridges to Practice project.
We want trainers who are committed to the philosophy of Bridges and are
willing to increase their knowledge about learning disabilities (LD) in
adults, and their impact on the work of the National Institute for Literacy.
Trainers selected for the Master Trainers Corps will be listed on the NIFL
LINCS and will be recommended to agencies that hire trainers.

There will be two distinct strands to this symposium:

*	Bridges trainers will meet to share their training experiences, and
hear from researchers, agency officials, leaders in the learning
disabilities field, and some of the original researchers who produced
Bridges to Practice. This will provide an opportunity for those who are
using the material to report back on the successes and problem areas, and
guide NIFL in determining materials that should be added to specific
training sessions.

*	State agency leaders will meet to discuss the progress of systemic
change in
serving adults with learning disabilities in their
state. The goal is to produce several examples of methods for producing
systemic change that can be used as models. Bridges trainers will be asked
to help identify the next steps in this area so we can know what additional
materials, services, and/or legislation are required.

At several points in the symposium, the state agency leaders and the
trainers will
meet and become acquainted with one another. The goal at NIFL is to have
trainers ready to work with state teams as they prepare their plans for
completion of systemic change in the adult world in their state. The entire
process is designed to consolidate our efforts and make the best use of the
resources we have available to us, both materials and personnel.

Bridges has been adopted as the philosophic base for change in a number of
places in the US. This symposium brings together some of the forces for
change to revitalize the movement, reinforce the commitment, and realign our
efforts.

If you are interested in being considered for the Master Trainers Corps,
please mark the dates and return the form enclosed to indicate your
commitment to being part of the team. Once we receive your form, we will
send you information about hotels, costs, etc.

Thanks for the work you have done to increase awareness of learning
disabilities in the adult world. We hope you will want to continue to work
with us in the future.

Sincerely,

June J. Crawford
Learning Disabilities Program Analyst

Please note: We hope to have some discretionary funds available for those
who are not able to pay the entire cost of the symposium. If you are
interested in participating but have no sponsor and cannot afford to travel,
please indicate this on your form. We will contact you if we are able to
assist.
