Your discussion and responses to the stories convinced me there are programs that would make a public commitment to work on an issue related to learning disabilities. Last year's Literacy Summit included learning disabilities on the agenda for national priorities in adult education. On the NLA discussion list today there was a reminder that you can find the information about the Literacy Summit publication "From the Margins to the Mainstream," and a study guide for small group meetings to discuss this document. Literacy programs are being asked to make a public commitment to work on one of the issues in the document. The commitments are being added to the document website. Learning disabilities is one area that is mentioned in the publication, but I have not seen any commitments listed, as yet, that address this issue. If you want to be a force for change, please go to the website and look at the materials: <http://www.nationalliteracysummit.org> Check the action items under each priority and read, especially, those that relate to learning disabilities. If you find one that you feel needs immediate attention, tell the NIFL-LD discussion group about it and indicate what action you think should be taken. If you know of a program that is already addressing this issue in a positive way that could be shared with another program, please tell us about it. We need to share the knowledge we already have and make that knowledge public. A joint commitment from the discussion list members would be a good way to begin, and then you can talk to your individual programs about getting involved in the project. I am willing to work on helping to organize a national effort in this area if you are. Read and think about this and let's see what responses we get for a week. After all, if we aren't willing to get involved, who will speak for the adult with LD, and who will bring that adult into the conversation about what is needed?
