Hello,
I am new to the list and should introduce myself. My name is Vicki and I
work with deaf and hard of hearing students in the 7th-12th grade levels. I
have been teaching deaf and hard of hearing students for 9 years. Because
my students' greatest deficit is in reading, I decided to go back to school
and get my Masters in Reading and become a Reading Specialist. Through this
work I have learned that my students' reading problems stemmed from a lack
of phonological and phonemic awareness, and a lack of knowledge regarding
the alphabetic principal. Research supporst this....the better deaf readers
use some kind of phonological recoding while reading, just like skilled
hearing readers! Because of this, I have gone back and become trained in
Alphabetic Phonics. I have been using it for two years with my students and
it has worked wonders! I would be happy to answer any questions you have
about deafness and reading, and I look forward to learning from ya'll!
Thanks,
Vicki
