Over the past several weeks there have been a variety of listserv references 
and inquiries about using PowerPath to Adult Basic Learning 
(www.powerpath.com) to screen native Spanish speakers in ESOL programs.  

PowerPath is an intake, screening, and intervention system for adults with 
learning difficulties.  In 1994 - 1996 a Spanish version of PowerPath's 
intake and screening was created in partnership with Chicago Commons 
Education and Training Center (ETC), the Illinois Secretary of State's State 
Literacy Office, and the Adult Learning Resource Center in Des Plaines, IL.  
The Spanish version was pilot tested at Chicago Commons ETC and an additional 
screening instrument created for identifying LD-type reading difficulties 
using Spanish words.  Since 1997, the Spanish Version of PowerPath has been 
field tested in New Mexico, Texas, California, and elsewhere in programs 
using PowerPath.

The Spanish version of PowerPath is available, at no cost through 2002, to 
programs that 1).  have PowerPath and 2).  have individuals who have a 
current Certification in PowerPath (indicating they have attended 20+ hours 
of training and have submitted a case study -- certification must be renewed 
annually).  In return, programs that are using the Spanish version are asked 
to submit the aggregate data from those individuals screened in Spanish.

The Spanish version includes translation for the following:  the Intake 
Interview, the Diagnostic Screening of information processing including: 
vision and hearing functions, reading encoding and decoding, visual and 
auditory processing, the Attention Difficulties Screening, and the Scotopic 
Sensitivity Screening.  Specific cultural accommodations are recommended for 
administration of the screening and engaging the ESOL adult learner.

In PowerPath's Individual Report (a computer generated report that offers an 
analysis of screening results and recommends practical 
accommodations/strategies based upon the client's areas of strengths and 
weaknesses) there special accommodations/strategies for persons noted in ESOL 
programs.

Many thanks to all of the PowerPath users who helped create and field test 
the Spanish Version!  Using line staff and ESOL students has helped create an 
easy-to-use translation with accommodations/strategies that help struggling 
ESOL learners more effectively manage learning of basic skills.
