PPS has developed 8 assistive technology programs that help individuals with disabilities to bridge the gap between the physical and electronic worlds. PPS is donating a million dollars worth of their software to schools and literacy groups. “Different people have different needs and that is why we developed 8 different products”, says Steve Timmer. Steve Timmer is the founder of “PPS”, and has developed the products out of his own needs. He began to lose his vision over 10 years ago. Out of frustration with both the cost and complexity of some of the adaptive technology he began designing low cost easy to use assistive technology. The first assistive technology he developed was a product called Scan and Read. “It is a simple concept”, says Steve Timmer, “place a book on a flat bed scanner, press a button and within a few seconds you will see and hear the document being read to you”. He states that, “Most people can master the software in just a few minutes”. Since the release of their first product they have released 7 more products that help individuals with all kinds of reading difficulties, from visual impairments to dyslexia. “If it is not affordable then it is not accessible”, said Steve Timmer, “And most people don’t complain about the price when we give it away!” The cost for adaptive technology has been a large barrier for people who need assistive technology. All of PPS’s products retail for less than $200.00 with the majority of them less than $100.00. “People were very cautious at first to purchase a product which sells for less than a 10th of it’s competitors, they did not expect much.” he says, “ Most were very suprized when they used it”. To set peoples apprehensions at ease PPS has donated over a 10,000 copies of their software to schools world wide in 5 languages, with 1,200 public schools in Texas being the latest recipients.
