Dear Mary ann,

i wish we could dump the term "whole language," it's imprecise.  It sugggests 
that readers gulp down whole words without any analysis, and that is not 
true, except for sight words.  Readers need print rich environments, 
interesting books, many ways to put reading and writing skills to use.  I 
don't think the term "whole language" adds anything to the discussion.
