Yes, I agree completely that a middle school reading level is not sufficient 
for one entering college, but it seems to be fine for those going to work 
directly from high school, depending, of course, on the position.   And, yes, 
the multiple meanings, references to literature, to the Bible, to mythology, 
and so on about which so many lower level readers have no clue makes it 
extremely difficult to get the correct meaning of a text, story, etc.  

So much to teach and so little time.  But we keep on keeping on anyway.  :-))
