DOL to Support Employment for Persons with Significant Disabilities
DOL's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) will initiate an =
Olmstead Community Employment Initiative, a strategy to ensure that all =
DOL policies and activities address the employment and training needs of =
people with disabilities who are at risk of institutionalization or who =
are transitioning from institutions into the workplace and community. =
ODEP will award Olmstead Community Employment Grants to states that =
develop an employment focus in their Olmstead state implementation =
plans. President Bush has requested $8.3 million of new money in FY 2002 =
to fund the grants, for nonprofit advocacy or service agencies and Local =
Workforce Investment Boards. Recipients must conduct aggressive outreach =
to persons with significant disabilities who are leaving or have already =
left institutions and who are currently in segregated environments =
and/or at risk of segregation.=20

RSA Seeking Input on Reauthorization of Rehabilitation Act
The Rehabilitation Act, the law that empowers "individuals with =
disabilities to maximize employment . and integration into society," is =
scheduled for reathorization prior to September 30, 2003. The =
Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) is seeking input on =
proposed changes to the act. Send comments to: rehab.reauth@ed.gov

NOD Calls for National Benchmark for Employment of People with =
Disabilities
The National Organization on Disability (NOD) has released the =
following: We now call on the president and Congress to keep employment =
a priority and work together toward a national goal of 38% employment of =
people with disability by 2005, with continuing progress toward 50% in =
the decade that follows.
