Fortunately our developmental reading teachers have an arsenal of strategies for getting them going, especially in the"active reading" departments. We'll be working on vocab. this year (I tutor students in their classes). I remember one young lady reading a passage about the INternet as a social phenomenon... when I asked her if she kenw what a social phenomenon was, she was stumped... social was hanging out with your friends, right? When I said "social" was more connected with "society" in that setting, a light bulb went on. Later references to people in business meetings "posturing" were equally confusing -- but when her teacher told her that that's what the guys had been doing in class that day it made more sense. THese are the connections that to me flag a learning disabilitity -- this missing a connection. We're going to be trying to flag down our students who have the gaping phonics-type gaps and teach what's missing in the lab; I'll be learning a lot this year, I hope :) >>> AWilder106@aol.com 07/26/02 07:59 AM >>> Dear Tom, A big hug and a kiss for writing as you have about your students. I had to reply quickly, I was so happy with your descriptions, I haven't yet run off your post. I hope I'll get more replies, I will then try to reply substantively or with some more questions. Many many thanks.
