Hi Folks,

I am a former list member who has rejoined for various reasons. As a person
who is currently a client of my state voc rehab office, I feel my counselor
tries very hard but those folks are unfortunately understaffed and as a
result, they really don't have a clue about learning disabilities. Also, if
you have a non verbal learning disability like I do, (Dyslexia is not the
only LD) that makes it worse since this disability is not as well known as
the other LDs.

Right now, I am studying Assistive Technology and just completed my first
course, which I am quite proud of doing since I have had many stops and
starts since completing my bachelors degree in the dark ages:) Hopefully, I
can find some type of career in that field and in the meantime, I need a job
that I can do. Right now, I am doing temp work but that gets old after
awhile.

Anyway, I have done all of this on my own without any help from DRS. I also
obtained my last position on my own without any help from them. But I am so
tired of clerical and entry level jobs when I know I have the intellect to
do better.

Obviously, I don't have any solid evidence but it seems to me that
unemployment and underemployment of the LD Population is a problem that
needs addressing but everyone wants to ignore it. Self determination and
similar themes sound so wonderful and are treated as the answer to all
problems with disability and unemployment. But if your LD affects the
processes that are involved in career planning/job hunting such as reading,
organization, and visualization, among many other things, those words are
extremely hollow and of little use.

Anyway, I fear with this report, that the powers to be will think all is
well when it sure it doesn't seem that way to me. I am glad to hear that a
few of you seem to share my concerns.

Vivian
