The learning disabilities work began with the original National Adult Literacy and Learning Disabilities Center that was funded by NIFL, and led to the publication of Bridges to Practice. Since March of 2000, the major work has been in the dissemination of Bridges, but am adding the areas of adult and adolescent reading to my NIFL portfolio responsibilities. This allows for a nice collaboration (my favorite word!) between the learning disabilities programming and the Partnership for Reading (NIFL-NICHD-Department of Education). To assist in this broadening of program responsibilities, NIFL has added two members to the team for this work. It is my pleasure to introduce them to you. 1. Tanya Shuy is our new Program Associate in Adult and Adolescent Reading and Learning Disabilities. A reading specialist, Tanya is a doctoral student in special education (specializing in LD). She previously worked as a research assistant to Drs. Reid Lyon and Peggy McCardle at the National Institute of Child and Human Development. This background will allow us to maintain close ties with the research that is being conducted in adult reading and learning disabilities. You will be hearing much more from Tanya in the near future as she will begin serving as the moderator for this discussion list in April. Her address is tshuy@nifl.gov. Please welcome her! 2. At our symposium in Alexandria in 2001, many of you met Shelly Coles, the program administrative assistant at NIFL. I am delighted to announce that Shelly will now be working with the adult and adolescent reading and learning disabilities programs, and you will be hearing from her frequently as she tries to get all our Bridges to Practice training materials and trainer lists in order. Shelly was a hit with everyone in Alexandria and we are delighted to have her as a member of our team on a permanent basis! She can be reached at scoles@nifl.gov.
