Hello Barb...and to others who have asked similar questions...

The Post-Symposium at the Learning Disabilities Association conference was a
full day of sessions for both Bridges to Practice trainers and other
interested individuals. We are happy to share what we learned. Our morning
speaker was Dr. James Russell of Missouri who presented an interactive
workshop on the brain that was designed to help all of us better understand
what is happening when we read. In the afternoon, Dr. Kenneth Pugh, a
researcher at Yale University who works with fMRIs and reading, showed us
the results of some of his work and explained what we can learn from this
research and what new questions are being asked as a result of this.

FYI: The development of a Spanish-language screening tool for learning
disabilities has been completed under the New York State Department of
Labor, with the coordination done through the LDA of Western New York, and
with researchers from the SUNY College at Brockport. A copy of the screen
and the research report that accompanies it will be sent to all
participants.

If you will send an e-mail to me, instead of to the discussion list, I would
be happy to share the information with anyone who is interested. I'll need
a full mailing address because some of the material cannot be transmitted
electronically so we will be sending packets.

My address is jcrawford@nifl.gov

Thanks for your interest!

Hello, June! Is it possible that you could also send me a copy? I
wasn't able to stay over for the Post-symposium. Sorry I didn't get to
talk with you very much. Last year it meant a great deal to me to be
able to sit down and chat with you.
I sincerely hope that you are well and happy. Barbara Guyer
P.S. I wasn't re-elected to the Board of LDA, but I am on Adult Issues
and Education Committees. I became quite fond of some people while I
was on the Board, especially the Past Presidents. I have learned so
much during the past 5 years. Take care. Barbara Guyer

The articles are not in electronic format. I have hard copies from Dr.
Russell and they will be sent out to everyone who participated at the
LDA
post-symposium when we send out the final participant list and the other
materials we promised. You should get everything within two weeks.

Hello to Bridges to Practice Trainers and others that attended the
Symposium this past Saturday, March 5, 2005 in Reno, Nevada,

This is a follow up to the excellent presentation, "How the Brain Works
-
An Interactive Workshop for Practitioners" by Dr. Jim Russell.

The date for his Newsweek issue reference "Anxiety And Your Brian" is
February, 24, 2003.

Second, the slide about literacy "Illiteracy & Sub-literacy" comes from
an
Article written by Lori Joseph and Frank Pompa in, USA Today,
November
29,
2000, A1. You can find the verbatim quote by going on Ed.NetBriefs.

Third, The LDA Newsbriefs articles that I wrote: The Average Person
Standard is in Vol. 36, No. 6 November/December 2001. The Learning
Disability Shibboleth is Vol. 39, No.4 July/August 2004. I gave
copies to
June Crawford at the conference.

Last, I wanted to thank you for your participation today. I really
enjoyed
doing the presentation.
