Last Saturday, 3 Drake Adult Literacy Center students and I went to
the Des Moines ADA Anniversary Rally where Sen. Tom Harkin and Rep.
Leonard Boswell both spoke.

We handed out flyers that stated:

"Have reading problems. CAN work.

	Where's the ramp?

Adult literacy IS a disability issue."

Senator Harkin included the right to learn to read when listed the
rights of persons with disabilities. We need ALL policy-makers to
affirm this right (and then allocate the funds to accomplish this!).

Larry Lehman gave Sen. Harkin a copy of his handwritten book, "The
Man Who Was Cheated." Here's a quote from the book:

"I have heard a lot of reasons for not knowing how to teach me. I
would like to know the reasons why and what can be done about it.

Can you tell me why I was cheated I would like to know

It is not whining... it is hurting and mad

Would you like to be call stupid... a lot of people call me stupid

I'm not stupid I just don't know how to read"

Larry's book is a work in progress. He began writing it as a letter
to the Des Moines School Board and continues to write. Now that he
is learning to read, he has become a vocal advocate for the rights of
adult new readers! Literacy changes lives.
