Hello all,

It is obvious that the topic of Assistive Technology is very interesting to
members as we have had some good conversation already.

Thanks to those of you that emailed me off-list with suggestions on
possible speakers for this topic.

I have invited a leading expert and speaker in this field who has accepted
the challenge. In my next post, I will provide more information on the speaker,
the dates, and the format that will be used.

Until then,

There are a number of screen readers that accommodate adult readers. These
programs allow to readers to focus on comprehension instead of encoding. For
students it allows them to interact with the text in more efficient ways.

For example, WYNN, which I use, allows the user to read and focus on
comprehension. This let's adults with reading difficulties to experience more
independence. They are able to scan documents which they can then read and even
fill out with accommodations using the program. Many libraries are investing
in programs like these making them accessible to people who may not have the
means to purchase these technologies. Additionally, there are
some community resources such as Dept. or Rehab which might purchase these
technologies for clients.
