My name is Vicki Conner and I'm on the Board of Directors of Literacy
Volunteers in Monongalia County, WV and I'm also a new member of the WV
State Board of Directors for LVA.

I am an RN with an MS in Health Education and have done various forms of
adult ed for many years but am fairly new (1 year) w/ Literacy Vols. In our
state we deal w/ poverty issues, under-valuing of education among some
groups of citizens, female role issues, and other things common to poorer
rural areas. We are interested in such issues as how to recruit truly
educable students-too many of our students are severely learning disabled
folks who are referred to us from social agencies and altho we are often
able to have a positive impact on their self-esteem, we aren't able to make
much headway w/ their literacy. This makes it hard for tutors to maintain
their interest over the long term because they don't get to see their
students making progress. I'm also interested in knowing what literacy
projects some groups have successfully received grants for. Also, is anyone
doing a successful program in a homeless shelter environment?
