Hello to all POVRACELIT Members!

My name is Claire Deroche and I'm the Director of Outreach and Referral at
the Literacy Assistance Center in New York City (www.lacnyc.org). A good
part of my time goes to the supervision of the Literacy Referral Hotline
which serves 24,000+ callers a year. As you can well imagine, my
interactions with both the callers to the Hotline (who are seeking Adult
Basic Education, GED classes and testing, and ESOL classes), and the
multi-lingual, multi-cultural, 5 member staff who respond to these callers,
offer many opportunities to reflect on the intersection of poverty, race
and literacy.

Previously I've worked in education in Maine, where I'm from, and in
Bolivia, where I did community development work for six years. Finally,
most recently, I joined a five year women's study project which will focus
on promoting feminine leadership through an intensive commitment to group
work focusing on taking an honest look at the ways we all participate in
oppression in all it forms.

The postings I've read so far on this list make me realize that this will
be another supportive forum for my own desire to participate in groups
which are seeking a more just and peace-filled world.
