Hello!

Racism is colorblind. Below are just a few of the many stories I have
on the effect of racism:

1. When I worked at the State tourism agency, one of the most
significant findings from a series of focus groups held in Mexico (our
biggest tourism market), was the fact that most Mexican nationals
perceived black people as a threat. They would recommend or not
recommend travel to a certain city based on the black population
alone.

2. When I asked my boss, a white man, why we did not have content on
our web site in different languages (Texas is a popular travel
destination for people from S. America and Germany), he stated: "If
they don't speak English, we don't want them."

3. I have a black friend that doesn't like Mexicans. When asked, "Did
you have a bad experience in Mexico or with a certain Mexican person?"
this person said, "No, my mom never liked Mexicans."

4. My grandfather came from Ireland to NYC in the early 1900s. The
signs on shops and the wharves stated "NO IRISH NEED APPLY." The only
work he could get was as a high power line worker. It was dangerous
work and before he died, he took 2000 volts through his body.

As teachers and trainers, we are role models. This might be the most
important part of our jobs. If we are prejudiced, if we allow
prejudice to be voiced without comment, if we laugh at tasteless
ethnic jokes, we are perpetuating the system of oppression and
racism--a system that can effect generations and even kill you.
